OUR MISSION

Creativity is what makes life fun. Our mission is to give people a truly accesible creative medium. We live to foster creativity by supporting hair artistry at all levels.

OUR STORY

In 2007, Shay and Nir Kadosh inspired by their family's success in the fashion industry in Israel, looking at the world of beauty, they felt that the hair space was relatively undeveloped and therefore full of opportunity. They tasked Vita Raykhman with coming up with a brand. The collaboration proved to be extremely successful and the three went on to create and develop all of the HMS brands.

BORN TO PERFORM LIVE TO IMPRESS

In a world where everything is about speed, our product development is SLOW!!! And we are proud of it. There is enough stuff out there. Sometimes it feels like mediocrity is the status quo and hype a measure of success.

We are in the business of making quality products that are born to perform and live to impress. Nothing short of greatness.

OUR TEAM

We believe in empowering our team to create and reach their full potential. We move fast and we challenge each other, but we look after one another and care about our culture, which makes working here extremely rewarding.

FAQ

Q and A with HMS.

Because inquiring minds want to know.

What does the day to day like at HMS?

We operates similarly to that of a semi-startup even though we have been around for quite a few years. Our day-to-day is very fast paced, highly collaborative and teeming with open communication.

How open is management to new ideas?

We want our employees to feel like they have a seat at the table and can contribute to important conversations as we continue to build out new processes & procedures. Our company is filled with brilliant and innovative people and we encourage their ideas to be heard on a daily basis. What's beautiful about our culture is that it is ever-changing due to the input of our employees. We want to make sure that everybody feels represented and that their voices matter. As we grow our blended family, we strive to provide outlets and resources to open our minds and broaden our horizons, together.

How important is health and wellness at HMS?

We have a big focus on health & wellness and incorporate monthly "wellness events" based off of what people want to experience whether that be mindfulness workshops, yoga classes or bringing in guest speakers to cover various topics like diversity, connectivity and community.

How does your CSR promise apply to the day to day of office life?

We have established company-wide initiatives like new recycling programs and donating to local farms through our composting efforts. Another core initiative to our culture is community involvement - whether that be through monthly donations to charities our employees care about or strengthening our ties to different organizations through team and individual volunteer opportunities. It’s important that what we put out into the world is reflected back into the core being of our company. We strive to always practice what we preach!

Why have I never heard of you?

Since the beginning we have focused on developing our consumer facing brands rather than that of our company. HMS is the motherboard but our brands interface us with the world. Our brands are our ambassadors to the world while the foundation that created them remains in the background.

Heat Makes Sense is an unusual name. Where does it come from?

We didn’t start in hair care but in wellness with a natural herb filled pillow meant to be heated and applied to the body. The name was a nod to the unique wellness properties of heat. The name is both a pun and a nod to the humor and lighthearted personality of our company.

Later we came to define the meaning of the name as a yin and yang where two opposite things come together to create something unique and better than the independent halves. Heat represents emotion, passion and inspiration whereas sense represents rationalism, intelligence and knowledge.

We believe that our success is due in part, to the company ecosystem which allows opposing forces, opinions, personalities and qualities to live together in harmony. It is this harmony of diverse elements that has come to be our strength.

As one of the business pioneers of Williamsburg and later Bushwick, what role have the
unconventional and artistic neighborhoods played in the development of the company?

We started our company in Williamsburg Brooklyn on S 5th street just under the Williamsburg bridge.

It was a large loft building with a glitchy freight elevator. At the time, Williamsburg was a fringe neighborhood occupied by artists and the creative community. It was not exactly a popular office space destination. As the neighborhood around us developed it became clear that Williamsburg was on the same trajectory as SOHO 20 years ago and was quickly becoming a hotspot.

Popularity brought rising rents so we moved to what was the fringe industrial neighborhood of Bushwick. People interviewing with us often found the neighborhood alarming, worried about their safety. Over time Bushwick like Williamsburg before it, developed into one of the most exciting urban neighborhoods in the world. People are drawn to this creative, alternative environment that’s on the forefront of cultural trends and movements. For us it represents  freedom of thought and the power  community that comes  when people create an environment that is their own and unapologetically unconventional.

As the neighborhood changes around us, and use with it, we see that if you have a  vision of what you want your world to be it can be made real.

What do you look for in potential candidates?

Above all, we look for people who care. Care about their community, their coworkers, their job, the products we create and our customers.

We believe diversity creates strength, passion is contagious and creativity wins loyal customers.

We move fast, take risks and empower teams to use their talents to accomplish audacious goals with a spirit of collaboration and yes, fun. We don’t just have jobs, we are part of something bigger. There’s a buzz in the air that everyone can feel and is a part of.

How would you describe the environment at HMS?

Anything but boring. We’re a fast-paced, high-growth company which means we are presented new challenges everyday as we grow our customer base and our brand while building a company that embodies an entrepreneurial spirit and our core principles.

We operate more like a high-tech company than a hair-care brand. We continually examine how we do things and try to improve. We want ideas. We want to experiment. We want to work smart. We want to be ethical.

Change is the norm and everyone is a part of it no matter what their position is. This dynamic environment isn’t for everyone, but for us we find satisfaction in seeing our ideas have real impact on the company and our customers.
